“My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and reading of the Psalms.” Servant of God Dorothy Day
I had the privilege of helping transcribe some pages of Dorothy’s diaries as part of the preparation to advance her cause for canonization. It was such a treat to read the minutia of her days - to see the care with which she journaled meetings with dignitaries and the poor alike. Whether it was the UN, the needy, or her friend Ann Perkins (yes - she had a friend named Ann Perkins!), the treatment was the same - presence and love.
Was she perfect? Not at all, and I think she’d be the first to scoff at that thought! But she was radical in her desire to live out the Gospel of Love, to offer her whole self to promoting the dignity of all not just in charity but in challenging anything that existed in opposition to it. It cost her dearly often enough, and yet again and again she continued. May we have the courage, purity of heart, and strength to do the same.
